The Big Unkle is a jazz-funk & fusion band from the suburbs of Philadelphia. The Big Unkle (TBU) draws upon elements of funk, progressive jazz, world beat grooves, and rock & roll. TBU’s fuses those styles into a cultural mix of music that reinforces the power of bass, the grace of melody and the depth of rhythm and “groove”. Conceptualized in 2009, the idea of the movement called The Big Unkle was a brainchild of bassist John Henderson (formerly of rock fusion power trio, The Other Element).

The core of The Big Unkle’s line-up consists of band founder, chief song writer and arranger and bass player, Henderson, and producer and drummer, “Quirky Tom" Theurer. Electric Violinist and Vocalist, Alice Marie and Jea Street on Lead Vocals. On stage and in the studio—whether the mix is blended with sultry vocals,  sax, guitars, percussion and keyboards, TBU relies on the talents of the most experienced funk, jazz and fusion players that the Philly Metro area has to offer.  TBU has one goal: To take the listener on a wild ride that is driven by compelling melody, exotic harmonies, soul and unrelenting bass and rhythm.

Performing in scores of venues in the Philadelphia and throughout the region. In addition to their monthly appearances at Peppers in King of Prussia for the last five years, TBU has played at some of the most popular rooms in the Delaware Valley such as: WarmDaddy’s,  The Trocadero, Hard Rock Cafe,  Johnny Brenda's, The North Star Bar, The Fire and The Tin Angel to name a few.

TBU's  commitment and connections with non-profit organizations and causes has also resulted in great experiences and many loyal fans. They believe in acknowledging and giving back to the community that supports us so faithfully. For the last five years, TBU has performed as a top bill at the ING Rock n Roll Marathon and has also played annually for series of fund raisers and awareness events for non-profit organizations like The Anti Defamation League (ADL), The Norristown Police Athletic League, The Montgomery County Sports Hall of Fame, The Eagle National Bank 5K Cancer Walk/Run and The Sam's Club / Children Hospital (CHOP) Fundraiser.

Recently signed to Toil Records, TBU released their first studio album Evolution which premiered in FYE Music stores on Black Friday 2015 and is now available via iTunes.

TBU can perform as a trio, quartet or as a full band, based on the requests of the host.

We were skeptical at first to add a band to our annual Eagle National Bank 5k walk/run, when we finally decided to have The Big Unkle, it certainly proved to be a huge success! They definitely were able to draw in the crowd, and the participants loved the music! They did a great job keeping up with the flow of the event and they really entertained us all! They definitely exceeded our expectations we have already booked them for next year’s event!
